In a seminar today we were talking about ethics and put into groups 2 groups had to research GAP and mine and another group Primark. Our group was stuck with backing up primarks ethics; I initially thought, oh no I don't like Primark as it is now i have to find good ethic stances from it. So I thought ok, think open minded Jess I'm sure you'll be shocked....and goly I really was!
I don't know if you've ever looked at Primarks principles, here they are
•To offer best value for money
•To improve continuously range of products on offer
•To treat customers as they are meant to be treated
•To strive for effectiveness
•Respect each other
•Ethical approach to employment & trading
And I was shocked to find out this, Primark is so eco friendly! okay it might have sweat shops (which by the way no one can prove if its true!)
•First Uk high street store to provide cardboard bags.
•Eco friendly carbon neutral store, implementing as many carbon saving strategies as possible. 48% carbon saving compared to previous stores. 40% over Uks target for 2010.
•Recycled aluminium as wall protection, sustainable timber, percussion taps, rainwater harvesting.
•Have embarked on a Carbon Strategy with Carbon Trust.
I think it might be fair to say that Primark might be a slave to its self. Its cheap, so it's not going to lose its customers really, no matter what the BBC says about it, so it stays it great demand....someone take the heat of poor primarni! these are some of the reasons for Primarks demand:
•Flagship Oxford Street store was mobbed when it opened in 2008.
•‘British people are addicted to shopping and consuming’ – Jane Shepherdson.
•20% up in 2009 from 2008 which also saw an 18% increase in profits.
•Opened new stores, increase sales of accessories contribute to the profit.
•Choice.
•Primark is now rivalling Marks & Spencer in market shares and sales volumes by 10.2%.
Everyone knows Primark for its sweatshops because of the BBC documentary, I found it funny when another member and I were looking on a website and it said that the documentary was staged, they couldn't find any concrete evidence that this is true of Primark! shock horror!
The Primark spokesperson said;
•Primark is an ethical organisation and takes its responsibilities seriously.
•"It's an absolute outrage for anyone to suggest otherwise.
•"The BBC came to us with very serious allegations about the conduct of a small number of factories which we investigated thoroughly.
"What we found left us with no option but to drop those factories"
